SpeegleSpeegle - Eighth Grade English All classes will be reading novels throughout the year. The first novel that we are reading is Where the Lilies Bloom. Students should purchase a copy of this book by the second week of school. The Bookshelf (located beside the Cullman Times) is a good place to find the books that we will be reading. It is important for students to keep up with their reading assignments because they will have a test on 2-3 chapters of the novel each Friday.
Lesson Plans Nov. 23-24 Monday :
8th Honors English:
Bellringer: Punctuate and capitalize a direct quotation Quotation marks with a song title Their - there Correct run-on sentence
Read examples of poems with allusions. Tonight students will write their own poems containing allusions. Copy and discuss new vocabulary/ spelling list: Commonly Misused Words (peal-peel/ continual-continuous / indicted-inducted / flair-flare/ etc.) Conduct a class spelling bee to determine which students will compete in the school spelling bee.

8th Regular English:
Bellringer: Same as Honors English
Spelling bee to choose contestants for school spelling bee. Continue to read and study Alabama Moon, Ch. 18-22. Study questions have been given that correspond with 80-90 percent of the test questions. Class time today will be given to read and finish answering those questions. Test will be tomorrow. Academic Lab:
Correct use of the apostrophe.

Bellringer: Correct use of past form of lie Underline names of newspapers Quotation marks with names of articles Punctuation of dates within a sentence
Finish spelling bee to choose contestants. Read student-written poems that contain allusions. Students will identify them as Historical, Mythological, Literary, or Biblical. _____________________________________________________________________
8th Regular English:
Bellringer: Same as HE
Test on chapters 18 - 22 of Alabama Moon. _____________________________________________________________
Academic Lab:
Practice with troublesome irregular verbs.

For the second nine weeks, periods 1 and 3 will be reading To Kill a Mockingbird. Periods 2, 5, and 6 will be reading Alabama Moon. Some copies are available in the library. Otherwise, Deb`s bookstore or The Bookshelf will have copies at a reasonable
price. Tests will continue to be on Fridays.
